This report compares the tax burden on businesses and individuals among provinces based on the calculation of average tax burden ratios. The report is divided into two main sections: one focuses on the business tax burden ratios and the other on the personal tax burden ratios. Our calculations in the business segment of the study rely on Statistics Canada’s data and, in the personal segment, on a combination of Statistics Canada and Canada Revenue Agency data. This report also discusses the concept of the marginal effective tax rate and presents results from external studies.
The tax burden is a key factor affecting both the cost of living and the cost of doing business. As such, this research provides Canadian organizations with valuable information on the tax attractiveness of each province.
