Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.

The Help-Wanted Index fell 2.4 points in December, bringing it to 124.8. Given the decline, employment growth is expected to moderate in the near term. Based on the latest index reading, the labour market is expected to experience a correction in January, losing 16,600 jobs.
