Strategic Risk Council

As a senior level risk practitioner, there are usually very few peers in your own organization to bounce ideas off of and learn from. The SRC offers a great opportunity to discuss best practices, innovative approaches and common challenges with other risk professionals. The networking and topical discussions with senior risk professionals from a wide range of organizations and industries keep me coming back. Each gathering leaves me with new perspectives and new ideas to try as we mature our ERM program. While there are other risk content focused groups, to me it is the level of discussions and networking with your peers that differentiates the SRC from these other groups.

Security Realities and Challenges of the Retail Industry in Using Monitoring Technologies

October 28, 2025 | Virtual

Marc Lapointe, Senior Director, Corporate Security and Resiliency, Metro Inc.

At the Spring 2025 SRC meeting in Toronto, we discussed the challenges of balancing employee productivity with employee monitoring.  To add an interesting perspective, the Globe and Mail, featured an article on May 20, 2025 on “Supermarket workers are wearing body cameras. Welcome to the new dystopia.”

While this article presented a hard look at some underlying intentions behind the use of monitoring technologies, there is also the reality and challenges faced by the retail industry.  In this webinar, Metro, detailed an account narrative, sharing their historical working environment, the political pressures, social distress of consumers, and the privacy, legal and technological boundaries that are creating an enhanced, interconnected risk ecosystem where things are not always as they seem.  They shared recent findings from the Quebec Commission for Privacy on using certain types of technological advancements.
