Building a Path to Patient-Centered Health Systems

Canada’s healthcare system is at a crossroads. Pressure is mounting to improve patient outcomes, enhance efficiency, and ensure sustainability for future generations. Value-based healthcare (VBHC) offers a proven, internationally recognized framework that can help Canada meet these challenges by aligning care delivery and costs with what matters most to patients: their health outcomes and quality of life.

VBHC Canada was established to provide evidence for applying this model nationally. This independent, pan-Canadian initiative leads research, coordinates implementation efforts, and builds capacity to support system-wide adoption. Working across public, private, not-for-profit, clinical, and academic sectors, VBHC Canada is the go-to source for aligning healthcare innovation with value, ensuring every advancement delivers meaningful, measurable impact.

We don’t think about value in health systems, but we think about cost. Value-based healthcare is about being obsessed with amazing outcomes. It forces us to be proactive and target scarce resources more equitably and efficiently to where patients need them most.

Our focus

VBHC Canada focuses on how to unlock, scale, and share the value of innovation across Canada’s healthcare system. Our research will examine how innovations are introduced and evaluated, how patient and system needs are identified and addressed, what infrastructure is needed to support value-based innovation, and how the benefits can be equitably distributed to drive better outcomes.
