Document Highlights

This survey was conducted after the terrorist attacks on September 11 and reflects the great degree of uncertainty with which business perceives Canada’s future economic growth.

  • Business confidence plunged by 39 percentage points in the third quarter.
  • Fewer than 10 per cent of respondents felt that the Canadian economy would improve over the next six months, down from 22 per cent in the second quarter.
  • Respondents indicated that both the financial position and profitability of their organizations would deteriorate over the next six months.
  • Business confidence will remain volatile over the next few quarters as firms come to grips with the economic effects of the war against terrorism.
