The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

- The Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability increased for the third consecutive month, rising from a revised 107.8 in June to 108 in July. Supported by strength in the export sector, the indicator was up 0.2 per cent for the month and 0.3 per cent for the year.
- While the top-line index posted another increase, the stronger showing did not translate into overall gains at the industry level. Only 26 of the 49 industries tracked by the index saw their profitability outlooks improve, down from 35 in July.
