Document Highlights
On May 30–31, 2018, Signal49 Research hosted its fourth annual Canadian Immigration Summit in Ottawa. The event featured 410 participants from across Canada, including federal immigration minister Ahmed Hussen; civil servants from the three levels of government; and officials from business, immigration law and consulting, educational organizations, and the settlement sector. The Summit considered two major themes: strengthening Canada’s economy and strengthening its immigrant settlement programs.
Summit speakers explored issues such as the potential impact of technological change on Canada’s immigration needs and how Canada can improve the global competitiveness of its immigration system. They also considered settlement program issues, including how the relationship between government and the settlement sector could be strengthened and how Canada could improve its measurement of immigrant settlement outcomes. In addition, emerging international issues such as U.S. immigration policy and the United Nations global compact for migration were explored. This report summarizes the event’s discussion points.
