About the Series
The Index of Consumer Confidence is based on Signal49 Research’s survey of Canadian households. It tracks consumers’ levels of optimism regarding current economic conditions, personal financial positions, short-term employment outlook, and making major purchases—as well as their expectations for the coming six months.
This index is a crucial indicator of near-term sales for companies in the consumer products sector.
The Index of Consumer Confidence is available onnline from September 2001 onwards.
Methodology
The Index of Consumer Confidence is a monthly report that provides a timely gauge of household sentiment about recent trends, future expectations for personal finances, job market prospects, and appetite to make a major purchase. The index is constructed using survey data collected by Léger, which administers a standardized questionnaire consisting of four key questions. Responses are aggregated to capture shifts in consumer perceptions and forward-looking attitudes. The Index of Consumer Confidence includes data going back to 2001, allowing readers to place today’s sentiment in historical context.
