About

Chris Viel is a Senior Research Associate in the Health knowledge area at Signal49 Research, where he has worked since February 2023. He brings an interdisciplinary background spanning both the core and social sciences, underpinned by formal training in epidemiology, data analysis, and health systems research. Chris holds undergraduate degrees in biology and gerontology, as well as a Master of Health Sciences in epidemiology from Lakehead University. During his graduate studies, he was awarded the prestigious Frederick Banting & Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship for his multi-province research examining the impact of supervisor mental health training in the workplace.

At Signal49 Research, Chris leads and supports a range of applied research and advisory projects focused on health system performance, workforce sustainability, and access to care. His work integrates quantitative analysis, evidence synthesis, and stakeholder engagement to inform policy and decision-making. Notable projects include examining funding and integration models for physician assistants across Canada; evaluating the clinical and economic impact of improved access to novel therapies for select blood cancers; and assessing the costs and benefits of expanding access to comprehensive genomic profiling for five metastatic cancers in Canada. Chris brings a diverse background in both clinical and applied research, with experience spanning mental health, workplace injury and disability, seniors’ care, and Indigenous health. He has developed strong competencies in research design, statistical analysis, knowledge translation, and working with multidisciplinary teams and partners. His professional interests centre on health policy, health economics, and outcomes research, which continue to shape his work and ongoing development.
