Building Labour Force Capacity in Canada’s North

Canada’s North is vast and dotted with diverse communities. In many regions, there is a lack of labour force capacity among the local population. Building Labour Force Capacity in Canada’s North attempts to answer the question: Given the multiple and often unique challenges in the North, how are organizations and communities building labour force capacity among the local population?

According to results of the Centre for the North’s Survey of Northerners’ Outlooks and Wants, Northerners feel that more employment opportunities are the number one way to make their communities better places in which to live. There is strong support for economic development: six in ten surveyed strongly support economic development; a further 27 per cent somewhat support it. By forming mutually beneficial partnerships, understanding each other’s needs, and taking a long-term approach to economic and community development, businesses and communities are gradually building labour force capacity in Canada’s North.
