- Housing Starts—Although U.S. housing starts are stabilizing, Canadian housing starts are expected to fall in 2009. Thus, residential construction activity will continue to detract from the performance of Canada’s wood products industry.
- Oversupply—The staggering drop in U.S. demand over the past two years has resulted is an oversupply problem, pushing lumber prices down to a 15-year low.
- Canadian dollar—The Canadian dollar has lost 20 per cent of its value since the beginning of the year, increasing the wood industry’s competitiveness and pushing up profit margins.
