In October 2016, Canada officially ratified the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. It is widely maintained that limiting global warming to the 2°C threshold will require industrialized countries to reduce their emissions by 80 per cent relative to 1990 levels by 2050. Canadian research efforts to date have focused on evaluating the efficacy of policy levers in reducing emissions.
Signal49 Research intends to address this analytical gap by building on existing modelling work that has evaluated the technical feasibility of achieving the 80-by-50 target in Canada. GHG Emissions Reductions in Canada: A Primer serves as an introduction to the project, providing an overview of Canada’s current emissions levels and trends; policy and regulatory approaches that provincial and national governments are currently taking; and recent non-governmental research and advocacy efforts.
