International Migration to Become a Focal Point Yet Again

Prince Edward Island’s average economic growth will rank fourth among the 10 Canadian provinces from 2031 to 2045. Population increases will be modest, especially in comparison with the growth seen from 2022 to 2024. We expect population growth to average 0.4 per cent per year from 2031 to 2045, about half of the gains seen at the national level.

Will the natural rate of population growth (births minus deaths) remain in negative territory through the end of the forecast period? Will net international migration revert to its pre-pandemic trend? Will lacklustre private investment continue on the Island? What will consumption growth look like, and how will it compare with the other Atlantic provinces and the country? And will American protectionism continue to threaten key industries on the Island?
