- Pleasure and business travel to Halifax are both expected to pick up this year with domestic travel to increase by 2.2 per cent and total overnight visits by 2.7 per cent. Business travel will get an added boost in 2017 when the King’s Wharf waterfront project is complete.
- Overnight visits to Montréal in 2016 are projected to increase by 3.4 per cent with the strongest gains coming from overseas markets; domestic overnight travel will advance by 2.8 per cent. However, growth in U.S. visitors will be slower than in 2015. Tourism activity next year should get a boost from celebrations for the city’s 375th anniversary.
- Tourism activity in Toronto is benefiting from strong growth in international visitors due to more direct air capacity and the weaker Canadian dollar, but growth in overnight visits from the U.S. may ease slightly this year compared with 2015. Major sporting events both this year and next should give a further impetus to pleasure travel.
- Calgary, still reeling from the plunge in oil prices, will continue to host fewer business travellers to the city. On the other hand, the lower Canadian dollar will incent more Albertans to travel closer to home and help boost growth in the number of international and U.S. travellers, 3.9 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively.
- Tourism activity in Edmonton is also bracing for another difficult year due to difficulties in both the local and provincial economies. However, total overnight visits will increase by a slight 0.8 per cent with overseas travel projected to expand by 4.1 per cent and U.S. visits by 3.5 per cent.
- Vancouver will enjoy another solid year of growth in both domestic and international visitors. Increased air capacity from Asia will help boost overseas visits by 5.6 per cent in 2016 while pleasure travel to the city will benefit from hosting the World Rugby Sevens Tournament and from a strong cruise season.
