  • Tourism in Canada grew at a sluggish pace in 2011, as the industry was plagued by high travel prices, sagging consumer confidence, and a strong Canadian dollar.
  • Overnight visits are expected to climb by just 1.5 per cent in 2012, with the domestic market (up 1.8 per cent) slightly outpacing overseas markets (up 1.6 per cent).
  • Strong growth in emerging markets, such as Brazil, India, and China, is expected to boost overseas visits over the next few years.
  • The volume of overnight travellers from the U.S. is expected to rebound slightly as the U.S. labour market improves and the market adjusts to the stronger Canadian dollar.
  • The pace of tourism spending growth is expected to rise over the medium term, increasing by an average of 5.3 per cent per year between 2013 and 2015.
