An efficient labour market is an essential factor in society’s well-being and prosperity. Apart from the obvious economic benefits produced by a healthy labour market, individuals can achieve fulfillment and personal growth when they hold high-quality jobs. Unfortunately, the only data that attract public attention are the unemployment rate and net job creation. While relevant, they provide only a partial picture of the labour market, which in reality is much more complex. Moving past these traditional indicators, the Institut du Québec has developed an employment index based on a series of indicators that provide a more complete overview of the situation. This non-partisan index highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the job market in Quebec, prompting more informed thinking about changes in the labour market.
