Unlocking Skilled Immigrant Talent: Why So Few Skilled Trades Immigrants Certify in Their Intended Occupation

In this research, we look at the persistent labour shortages in Canada’s skill trades.

Canada’s immigration system has several mechanisms designed to help fill the demand for skilled labour in our trades industries, yet the gap between supply and demand continues to grow. Less than 20 per cent of immigrant journeypersons certify in their intended trade.
What programs currently exist to recruit immigrants to help fill these gaps? Which trades have the highest certification misalignment rates for immigrants? How does this misalignment map onto skilled trades demands over the next decade?
