On behalf of the Future Skills Centre, Signal49 Research has developed the Automation Vulnerability Index (AVI) to track occupational vulnerability and workforce resiliency. Using the AVI, we can improve our understanding of Canada’s unique skills training needs.
In Assessing Abbotsford-Mission’s Vulnerability to Automation, the authors report that the region has the highest share of the labour force with a high school diploma or less—35.6 per cent more than the national level. This is one of the key reasons why the region has the fourth-highest AVI score in the country. The regional share of high-risk, low-mobility workers is also higher than the national (by 13.4 per cent), as is the share of its labour force in slow-growing occupations (by 4.5 per cent). This further exacerbates the region’s vulnerability to automation.
The data briefing also suggests some policy considerations to aid people to transition into less automation-susceptible occupations.
