Who Are Canada’s Key Chemistry Patent Holders? A Comparative Analysis With U.S. Holders

Ownership of chemistry patents is significantly more concentrated in Canada than in the United States. On average across 11 technology classes, the top 10 Canadian patent holders account for 22.1 per cent of total patents compared with 16.2 per cent in the U.S., a 5.9 percentage point gap that is statistically significant.

Are most technology fields in both countries dominated by private companies? What emerging technology fields show the highest concentration in Canada? What other technology fields exhibit the greatest concentration among Canada’s top patent holders? And what entities dominate several chemistry fields in Canada? In the United States?
