Who Are Canada’s Key Mechanical Engineering Patent Holders? A Comparative Analysis With U.S. Holders
This data briefing investigates the concentration of patent ownership in Canada’s innovation system. Patent ownership in mechanical engineering is not significantly different between Canada and the United States. On average across eight technology classes, the top 10 Canadian patent holders account for 17.5 per cent of total patents compared with 16.8 per cent in the U.S., a 0.7 percentage point gap that is not statistically significant.
Are most mechanical engineering fields industry-driven in both Canada and the United States? How does patent ownership concentration vary across mechanical engineering technologies? And which fields show the highest concentration of patents in the two countries?
