Agriculture Prices—After falling throughout much of 2016, prices for a variety of agricultural products have been rising in 2017, with the largest gains being reported for oilseeds and animals. That is good news for industry revenues and profits.
Canadian Dollar—The Canadian dollar has strengthened in recent months and small additional gains are expected over the rest of the forecast period. With exports accounting for half of the industry’s sales, this will have a negative impact on revenues.
Labor Shortages—Agriculture is experiencing significant labour shortages, with high rates of unfilled job vacancies. Seasonality, perceptions about the industry, its rural location, and relative rates of pay are all factors.
