Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.

The Help-Wanted Index rose 2.4 points to 85.2 in March—its first gain in three months. Last year, employment grew by only 0.6 per cent—its weakest performance in over two decades, aside from the recession year of 2009 (when employment declined by 1.6 per cent).
