Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.

After two months of declines, the Help-Wanted Index rose 1 point to 90.3 in December. While the gain was enough to offset only a small fraction of the two previous declines, those declines followed a significant gain in September.
