The monthly Index of Consumer Attitudes is constructed from responses to four attitudinal questions posed to a random sample of Canadian households. The latest results are based on over 2,000 telephone interviews conducted in early January 2003.

Consumer confidence bounced back across the country in January, putting an end to the steep drop of the past three months. The Index currently stands at 122.2 index points, 4 points higher than its December level.
- The healthy rebound in confidence was broadly based across the country, with the Atlantic provinces recording the biggest improvement of 14.5 index points.
- Quebec had the smallest increase of 2.1 index points, although it once again held the highest confidence rating among the provinces.
- British Columbia still lags behind the rest of the country with only 102.6 index points.
