Driven by a slew of disappointing economic data announcements in the past month, equity markets contracted substantially in late September and the first half of October. Consumers appear to have taken notice, as the national Index of Consumer Confidence fell for a second consecutive month, this time by 3.9 points to 84 (2002 = 100).
