The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

- The Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability posted another decline in October, marking four straight months of decreases. However, October’s drop was the smallest of those declines.
- The weakness in the index since July suggests profits will show no improvement in the second half of 2011. Still, the slower rate of decline in October indicates that the profit picture shouldn’t get much worse in the new year.
- The most daunting news this month is that the number of industries showing a decline has surged. Of the 49 industries covered, 26 posted declines.
