As major research performers, universities have the potential to significantly influence our prosperity. Consequently, the interest of both the corporate sector and policy makers in maximizing the economic impact of university research has been growing, not only in Canada, but also in other developed countries.

To assess the importance of universities in the national system of innovation and the extent of linkages between universities and private sector companies in various G7 countries, this report looks at three indicators:
- share of country’s R&D expenditure performed by universities;
- share of basic research in these countries that is conducted by universities; and
- share of private sector funding in the overall level of university research funding.
