Economic growth will be strong in the Western part of the country this year—except for British Columbia, where growth will cool following a year of fiscal and Olympic-related boosts in 2010.

Fuelled by renewed interest in developing the oil sands, Alberta will see strong economic growth in 2011–12, while Saskatchewan will benefit from tax breaks and a hot mining industry.

Manitoba will hold its own despite floods postponing seeding in many areas.

Growth will be more moderate in Central and Eastern Canada.

Weaker construction activity will dampen New Brunswick’s real GDP growth in 2011. But Prince Edward Island will see strong gains in utilities, while Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy will continue to post stellar growth.
