The Quebec 2018 budget provides a number of key projections, promises, and plans, including:

  • Provincial government spending will grow by nearly 6 per cent in 2018–19 but will then return to a more sustainable level of 3.5 per cent in the short term.
  • Quebec’s economy has performed well over the last year, but the long-term trend is toward weaker growth—around 1.5 per cent a year—due to the aging of the population.
  • Quebec plans to pay down its debt by $10 billion over the next five years, which will lead to savings of close to $400 million a year for the government in the long term.
  • The Quebec government plans to continue making annual payments into the Generations Fund and to spend $2 billion a year on paying off its bonds as they come due.
