Improving innovation skills through the public education system will lead to increased human capacity and economic growth. The Issue Statement identifies strategies to build emphasis on innovation skills development in public education.
Document Highlights
This Issue Statement, produced by the National Council on Education and Learning, focuses on how the Canadian public education system can drive the economy through innovation. By recognizing the importance of innovation, focusing on innovation skills in curriculum and programs, and recognizing innovation skills in its credentials, public education can ultimately raise human capital. Creating institutional capacity, collaborating with business, and generating public policy to build a culture of innovation are critical investments leading to an integrated education solution. The Issue Statement identifies strategies that will address the major barriers that currently limit the effectiveness of educational institutions in developing innovation skills and include the development of a pan-Canadian framework for promoting innovation skills; recognizing and credentialing innovation skills; strengthening links among education, business and communities; and increasing innovation training in pre- and in-service programs for educators.
