Document Highlights

  • On a national basis, tourism activity in Canada is projected to increase by 1.8 per cent in 2012, led by a 3.1 per cent rise in visits from overseas.
  • More modest increases in travel prices will help to stimulate domestic tourism demand, however, spending will be curtailed by limited growth in discretionary household income.
  • Following many years of decline, overnight visits from the U.S. are expected to post slight growth this year. However, the medium term outlook for further growth in U.S. visits remains subdued.
  • Emerging markets such as China and India will continue to drive growth in overseas visits, while prospects for most traditional European markets stagnate.
