Consumer confidence slumped in March, likely due to the increase in gasoline prices and the uncertainty linked to the disaster in Japan. However, other indicators—except for housing—suggest that the recovery is progressing well. Consumer spending, especially for autos, has been expanding at a pace above expectations since the beginning of this year and labour markets are recovering.
