Building on Signal49 Research’s 2010 report Innovation Catalysts and Accelerators: The Impact of Ontario Colleges’ Applied Research, Colleges Ontario held a symposium in February 2011 to examine the report’s recommendations and identify opportunities for action. The 125 participants included education ministry staff from Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia; business leaders with experience as applied research collaborators with colleges; and college students who have participated in applied research collaborations with industry. The symposium produced a wealth of insights on how to enable college applied research to contribute to innovation, productivity, and prosperity in Canada. In particular, participants made these recommendations: Ontario colleges will need more funding and time to develop and deploy their applied research capacity; a college applied research leaders program should be created to unlock the applied research expertise of Ontario college faculty and students; and students need to be given significant opportunities to participate in applied research.
