Signal49 Research’s Help-Wanted Index is an indicator of the number of new jobs advertised online. Our empirical analysis has shown that variations in the number of jobs posted online are generally followed by similar variations in employment in the ensuing months. Thus, the index can be used to predict near-term employment trends.

The Help-Wanted Index rose 1.1 points in March, bringing it to 131.9. The fact that the gain was so small suggests that employment will post little growth over the near term as the labour market aligns with the slowdown in output growth experienced in the second half of last year.
