Canada’s healthy economy has been a boon to employers, employees and unions. However, the effects of globalization and the international war for talent will shift priorities on both sides of the bargaining table. This year’s outlook examines the impact of Canada’s aging workforce and tightening labour market on labour relations.
Management’s immediate priorities will be increasing productivity and flexibility, promoting workforce engagement and building strong labour-management relationships from the ground up. Looking to build and maintain a competitive position in global markets, management may be willing to use job security as a tool to bargain for higher productivity and to attract and retain talent.
Labour’s priorities include safeguarding retirement income, protecting health benefits and obtaining job security guarantees and wage increases. Unions are having to grapple with waning membership and influence, as older members retire from the workforce and potential members from burgeoning industries fail to join.
