Despite increased knowledge of what keeps us healthy, Canadians are not any healthier than they were a decade ago in terms of chronic disease and other health problems. Healthy active living—the consistent and continual practice of health-enhancing behaviours at both individual and population levels—can bring about health benefits in all areas: physical, social, emotional, and environmental. Signal49 Research’s Canadian Alliance for Sustainable Health Care research series Moving Ahead: Healthy Active Living in Canada will comprise several research briefings that aim to identify cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable interventions to promote and improve healthy active living. This briefing provides an overview of the linkages between modifiable healthy lifestyle risk factors and chronic conditions. It also lays the groundwork for the subsequent briefings. The research series will culminate in final recommendations on how to move forward on the healthy active living agenda.
