On May 8 and 9, 2019, Signal49 Research hosted its fifth annual Canadian Immigration Summit in Ottawa. The event featured 380 participants from across Canada and around the world. The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, federal Minster for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, provided the opening remarks. Participants included civil servants from the three levels of government and representatives from business, immigration law and consulting, educational organizations, and the settlement sector. The Summit explored how Canada can respond to emerging immigration issues in a rapidly changing world. We tend to dwell on the past to tackle today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s, but the world is not standing still. Changes at home and abroad will disrupt Canada’s immigration system in ways we cannot currently fathom. We need to devote more time and energy to strategic planning.
Speakers from different sectors offered their thoughts on how to plan for the future of immigration. This report summarizes the event’s discussion points.
