Document Highlights

  • Despite low COVID-19 case numbers in Yukon in 2020, the Government of Yukon exercised great caution when loosening restrictions due to the territory’s relatively limited health infrastructure.
  • Tourism in Yukon is forecast to recover more slowly than in most provinces over the next four years. Some pickup in visitor numbers will occur in 2021, but it will take time for territorial air capacity and traveller confidence to bounce back.
  • By 2022, total overnight visits to Yukon will reach approximately 69 per cent of their 2019 pre-pandemic level but will remain below their pre-pandemic levels beyond the forecast period.
  • International visitors to Yukon typically outnumber domestic visitors. However, the pandemic has cast a light on the importance of travellers from the provinces for the territorial tourism industry. Some public health restrictions were lifted briefly on July 1, 2020, to allow visitors from British Columbia to enter Yukon. However, the Yukon–B.C. “Bubble” burst in November 2020 amid rising numbers of new cases in British Columbia.
